Coming Soon: Power Ballad

PART PERFORMANCE LECTURE, PART KARAOKE PARTY

“I am looking for a (body) language which exists outside the patriarchal definitions. Of course that is not possible. But who is any longer interested in the possible” – Kathy Acker

Part performance lecture, part karaoke party, deconstructing gendered linguistic histories and ripping apart language to find a new articulation of pleasure, anger and femaleness. We’re smashing it all to pieces and starting again. We’re behaving badly. We’re singing too many power ballads.

Created and performed by Julia Croft – Theatre & Performance Artist
Directed by Nisha Madhan (The Town Centre)

“Power Ballad is a revolution: winking while bringing both form and content to its knees in a way that is deeply, deeply hopeful.” – The Pantograph Punch

Power Ballad has been selected to travel to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – your support of this season will help make it happen!

POWER BALLAD plays
6 – 17 June; 6.30pm

I am a theatre-maker, performance artist, director and producer. I am of Indian descent and I live in Auckland, New Zealand.  My work has been strongly influenced by the time I have spent living in Paris and Brussels. I’m interested in creating work that encourages a collective experience and examines the contract between performers and audiences.

I currently work with two independent companies.

THE TOWN CENTRE is a company I have created for my personal directing work.  I work with a small ensemble of performers on shows that use game-based, structured improvisations.  I like to deconstruct the theatre experience, and I take my cues from companies like Forced Entertainment (UK) and Kate McIntosh (NZ/BE).

Direction: Nisha Madhan. Designer: Stephen Bain. Performers: Ash Jones, Josh Rutter, Lara Fischel-Chisholm, Julia Croft and Simon Haren.

FUTURE HOTEL is an artist collective I created with Stephen Bain in 2009 while we were living in Paris.  Future Hotel delivers public performances that generally involve the element of sound in some way.  We work with wireless headphones, sound triggers and strangers.

Collaborators: Nisha Madhan, Stephen Bain.

Guest Collaborators: Jeff Henderson, Drew McMillan, Sam Hamilton, Lara Fischel-Chisholm.
