Power Ballad

PART PERFORMANCE LECTURE, PART KARAOKE PARTY

“I am looking for a (body) language which exists outside the patriarchal definitions. Of course that is not possible. But who is any longer interested in the possible” – Kathy Acker

Part performance lecture, part karaoke party, deconstructing gendered linguistic histories and ripping apart language to find a new articulation of pleasure, anger and femaleness. We’re smashing it all to pieces and starting again. We’re behaving badly. We’re singing too many power ballads.

Created and performed by Julia Croft – Theatre & Performance Artist
Directed by Nisha Madhan (The Town Centre)

“Power Ballad is a revolution: winking while bringing both form and content to its knees in a way that is deeply, deeply hopeful.” – The Pantograph Punch

Power Ballad has been selected to travel to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – your support of this season will help make it happen!

POWER BALLAD plays
6 – 17 June; 6.30pm
Basement Theatre

Created and performed by Kate Bartlett.

Here are two things Kate thinks you should know about this show:
1) She is trying to hold on to the bits of her life that only exist as memory;
2) She is very fond of that Sharon Van Etten lyric “I washed your dishes, but I shit in your bathroom”.

A multi-media re-calling and re-telling of times genial, volatile, and that which is folded in between. Created by Kate Bartlett with directional input and output from Nisha Madhan.

Part of Art Week at Basement Theatre. For one week only, theatre and visual art meet and mingle on our stages to produce these genre-defying works.

Written and directed by Ash Jones.

READ CORRESPONDANCE BETWEEN NISHA AND ASH

Factory farmed youth ends with the infusion of buying power. The citizen unit goes from child, to adult. He gets responsibility. But Thomus’ family seems to be on the brink. How do we fix things in place? How do we keep things ok? Do we act? Or do we let the market run its course?

Thomus is a new work entirely in iambic pentameter by first-time writer, Ash Jones. Inspired by David Lynch films and youthful angst, Thomus will be one quick, impactful, psycho-thriller.

August 30 – September 10
Basement Theatre, 8pm

Set design by Andrew Foster
Lighting design by Rachel Marlow
Sound design by John Gibson and Tom Dennison
Produced by Sara Shirazi, Arlo Gibson and Ash Jones
